4 Major Factors to consider before buying PET Scrap

Recycling is a trending term these days and so are using recycled products. Consumers have become more conscious of what they are purchasing and what materials they are made of. This increased the demand for recycling and recycled products. Hence, plastic recycling is a popular business in India.

In this blog, we’ll talk about the 4 major factors to consider before buying PET Scrap

  1. Colour Ratio
  2. Clearness of PET Scrap
  3. Bale Assembly
  4. Storage Conditions

The plastics recycling market in India is estimated to grow at a rate of 6.5% to attain a market size of US $53.72 billion by the end of 2023.

Among plastic recycling, PET scrap recycling is the most common one. PET bottle scrap is one of the most selling and commonly sought after post-consumer commodities. PET scrap has various industrial applications, is easily recyclable and is versatile. The recycled PET scrap is generally known as R-PET.

Procuring PET scrap is not as easy as it sounds. A lot of factors are involved in it; from dryness, moisture content, colour to transparency, and more.

If you are new to the recycling business or just started out, it is important to know a few things before buying PET scrap.

1. Colour Ratio

There are different colours of PET scrap. All of them do not have the same worth. While clear PET bottle scrap has the highest value, coloured ones have slightly less value.

The ideal clear to colour ratio is 80 to 20 or above (eg. 90 to 10). In other words, if there are a total of 100 PET scrap bottles, then 80 of them should be clear and 20 can be coloured. In case the ratio is less than 80 to 20, the value decreases or becomes less desirable.

Additionally, a lot of coloured plastic scrap in bales makes it difficult to process. This, in turn, increases the cost, delays in sorting and other processing steps.

2. Clearness of PET Scrap

The more clear the plastic scrap is, the higher the value. Of course, this is widely known. Clear plastic pet bottle scrap is highly desirable as it is easy to process. Alongside, lightly tinted blue plastic scrap also has high value. They are easiest to process and shred into PET flakes.

On the other hand, dark-coloured PET bottle scrap such as green and dark blue have less value. This is mainly due to the reason that coloured scrap causes technical problems during processing and recycling.

Amber coloured PET bottle scrap, eg: beer bottles, also have less recycling value.

3. Bale Assembly

Measuring and packing bale quantity correctly is more important than you think. If the bale is not packed properly, it would take up more space in the container or truck, thereby leading to extra logistics costs.

The best quality pet bottle scrap will be clean. They do not contain any moisture, dust, paper, metal or other particles.

Another important factor to keep in mind is the assembly of bales. The pales should be easy to load and unload and packed efficiently. Ideally, bales should be packed at 90-degree in the edges so that maximum weight fits in the truck or container. Packing them together also ensures that bales do not fall off during loading, shipping, or unloading.

4. Storage Conditions

The ideal environment for storing PET bottle scrap is in a dry, indoor area. If the bottle scrap contains any moisture, then it will affect the weight of the bale and could result in a few losses. It is always advisable to keep the PET scrap as dry as possible.

While these are the main factors to consider before buying PET scrap, there are others as well. Considering these parameters while buying enables both buyers and sellers to be conscious of the material.
